The Herdmans (later “Hurdman”)

The Herdmans (later “Hurdman”) were Wesleyan Methodists.

Henry Herdman (senior), shoemaker, (born Belturbet, County Cavan, Ireland, 26 March 1789, died in Eardley, 1880), and brother Charles Herdman (senior) (1786 - 1847) emigrated to New York City in 1811.

Henry met Elizabeth Maxwell Farris (widow) in New York, married her before 1816. They were adherents of John Wesley, Methodists.

In 1818 they moved from New York City, settled on Klock road between Cook and Pink roads,(lots 20, 21 and 27, range 5, in Hull Township).


Elizabeth Maxwell born in Ireland, 1 August 1787, died in Eardley, 30 March 1875, 87 yr.) first married Robert Farris of Co Cavan with whom she had three children:

  1. John Farris, 6 June 1808 - 2 Feb 1897, 88 yr.

  2. Maxwell Farris, 31 October 1809 - 28 October 1874, nearly 65 yr. m. Jane Maxwell. Their daughter Elizabeth Ann m. Isaac Lusk (Diane Aldred’s great-grand-parents)

  3. Dorothy/Dolly Farris, 16 August 1811 -


Elizabeth Maxwell Farris was widowed, then married Henry Herdman

Five of their children settled on farms along the 2 km of highway northwest from Maple Lane, from 1844 on.


Henry Herdman junior, (twin) 3 November 1816, NYC - 29 May 1907, 90 yr. m. Martha Jowsey in 1858 (he’d known her as a baby). Henry Herdman Jr. & Martha Jowsey house, #1620 route 148. log house built in 1844, Old Lodge Farm.

4 children:

  1. Henry Thomas Hurdman (Dr.) 1860 - 1946, 86 yr., m 1896 at Moorehead Station, Emma Clark, no children. Bryson.

  2. Anna Elizabeth Hurdman (1862-1959, 97 yr.) m 1885 Richard McCullough Ritchie (1851-1940, 89 yr.). The Forest House (hotel), Bryson. Her 2 children:

Robert Henry Ritchie 1886-1910.

Thomas Frederick 1888 - 28 Feb 1976, m “Jean” Jane McNaughton Dick, 17 Apr 1895 - 1995. His 3 children: Frederick A. 1919 - , Janet 1922 - , George Dick 1926 - 2000.

  1. William Herbert (1865 - didn’t survive.

  2. Emma Margaret Hurdman (4 Feb 1866 - 2 August 1953), m 1891, H. Frank Grimes (Aylmer Rd.).


Elizabeth Herdman, (twin) 3 November 1816 - 25 February 1908, 91 yr. m. 1846, Steadman Bebee, settled on lot 4, range 4, Eardley township, #1640 route 148. An original barn has been restored, but the house has gone. Mr Bebee in lumber trade, died 3 Oct 1857, age 69, leaving her with 4 young children:.

  1. Susannah Bebee m Robert Breckenridge

  2. William Hurdman Bebee m. Eleanor Jane Pink

  3. Sarah Emily Bebee, m William Joseph Lusk

  4. James E Bebee died unmarried


William Maxwell Herdman, (11 March 1819 (New York City) - 24 May 1881, 62 yr. Buried in Conroy/Bellevue cemetery plot 155.), m Mary Moffatt (24 Dec 1828 (Hull township) - 6 Dec 1891).

While William remained Methodist his children attended the Anglican church (Mary Moffatt’s stepfather Rev. John Macmaster had been Church of England Minister). Stone house at #1583 route 148, built about 1864. (See Farmhouse link for more on this house and family.)

  1. Isabella b 1854, m. Edwy Kenny.

  2. Elizabeth b 1855, d unmarried, 8 August 1911.

  3. Alexander M (Moffatt/Maxwell?) Herdman Oct 25 1857 - 30 September 1858 (11 months old). “Only son” on WMH memorial stone.

  4. Margaret Jane Hurdman, (1859 - 19 January 1943, age 84, unmarried), About 23 when father William died, 33 when mother died, became part owner of farm, which she gave to her sister Mary Emma for her (and husband’s) lifetime (inherited by her nephew, Clarence Hurdman Godwin of Fredericton NB (m 1927), who died 14 Feb 1964, before John Williams, so went to Clarence’s only child, Eric Godwin, great grandson of William M.Herdman).

  5. Mary Emma Hurdman (1863 - d 21 Jan 1945, age 82, United Church) m 1906 John Alexander Williams (d 2 June 1964, St-Paul d’Aylmer). (obituary says she died in Mrs William Foran’s home). She was about 44 when she married John Williams, the hired hand, who may have been considerably younger.

  6. Wilhelmina Hurdman (Mina) m E.Benjamin Godwin of Ottawa, she was still living in 1945 when Mary Emma died.

Susan/Susannah Herdman, 26 Dec 1820 - 22 May 1900, 79 yr. m. Timothy Moffatt, Mary’s brother. buried Pink’s cemetery.


James Hurdman, 18 May 1824 - 24/26 Dec 1908, 84 yr., first married Grace Radmore, 1844 - 11 May 1873, she died age 29. (Grace’s father, Emmanuel Radmore, born Atherington, Devon, 10 July 1800, died Hull township 1879, age 79. Her mother, Jane Moffatt, born Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland,  May 12, 1798, died aged 72). James Herdman & Grace Radmore’s stone house at #1622 route 148.

His children:

  1. Ellen (“Nellie”) Jane Elizabeth Hurdman born 20 Oct 1863, m. James Little Rolston in 1881, died 9 November 1953.

  2. Susan Emily Hurdman, born 7 August 1865 m Rev Herman S. Osborne.

  3. Henry Emmanuel Hurdman born 23 Dec 1867.

  4. James William Hurdman 30 Dec 1871, deceased 1878 age 8 yrs.

  5. Howard Radmore Hurdman 15 June 1872 - 16 March 1926.

  6. James Hurdman’s 2nd marriage to Jane Rolston after May 1873; daughter: Lyla G. 1877-1958, m. WT Brown


Charles Hurdman, born 31 May 1826, m. 30 Nov 1855, Fanny Stephenson, later emigrated to Australia.

They built the log house at #1652 route 148 and it was passed on to Charles’s nephew, Thomas Robert Hurdman (son of Thomas Maxwell Hurdman) and his son Russell Hurdman.


Thomas Maxwell Hurdman, 8 July 1829 - 18 June 1906, 76 yr., m. Mary Jane Pink 3 April 1836 - 13 Jan 1916.

Their children:

  1. Elizabeth b 1857, married James Little Rolston 1879, died 1880.

  2. Mary, m Samuel Ezra Benedict

  3. Nancy, 1861-1896

  4. Susannah, 1863-1911, married George Curtis, 1906.

  5. Henry Pink Hurdman 1865-1892

  6. Thomas Robert Hurdman (1868-1941) m. Agnes Maude Scott (1877/8-1963). Children: Winnifred, Russell Hurdman m. Grace Rogers.
